Vancouver Island University

Established in 1969, originally as Malaspina University College, Vancouver Island University is 4 years comprehensive academic institution. Commonly referred to as VIU, the school is located in Nanaimo, British Columbia and offers courses to students in coastal BC and Vancouver Island, with a number of other campuses located across the province.

VCU offers a wide variety of programming, something that makes it an attractive option for students in BC, across the country in Canada, and for international students. The school offers well over 100 programs at the certificate, degree, diploma, and post graduate level, providing students with many academic options and opportunities.

Campuses at VIU

Your experience at VIU will largely depend on which campus you attend. There are four campuses that make up the university. They are:

  • Nanaimo Campus: This is the main campus at Vancouver Island University and has all the amenities that students need to complete their studies.
  • Cowichan Campus: Students can take the first two years of university courses, and a variety of certificate and diploma programs on this campus.
  • Powell River Campus: Students can take first year university courses, basic adult education and career programs at this campus.
  • Parksville- Qualicum Centre: This campus offers programs in career preparation, adult literacy, and professional development and training


Academic Programs at Vancouver Island University

Diversity of programs is a big selling feature of VIU. Students can chose between a variety of programs at all academic levels. The core areas of study include:

International Education and Vancouver Island University

VIU is very much an international university. The school is active in international education and each year more than 1000 students from over 50 countries around the world study here.

The school also has an internationalization strategy in place that provides students with the opportunity to study abroad, offer internationally recognized certificate programs, recruits faculty with international experience, and support other international education initiatives.
 
VIU also has international exchange programs with academic institutions around the world. The school offers students the opportunity to study abroad and engage in practical co=op placements in countries such as Australia, England, France, Italy, Mexico, Japan, and many others.
 
Some of the schools that Vancouver Island University has partnership programs with include California State University, University of Montana, University of Hertfordshire, and Victoria University is Australia.
