University of Northern British Columbia

The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) was established in 1990 and is located in Prince George, British Columbia. UNBC is one of Canada’s best small universities, with a passion for teaching, discovery, people, the environment, and the North.

UNBC aims to provide enriching educational opportunities, including research involvement, close collaboration with faculty, and hands-on training gained through work terms and internships. The University of Northern British Columbia recognizes that how and what they teach has a direct impact on student satisfaction and graduate success. As such, instruction is enhanced by innovative research, cutting-edge technology, and approaches to learning that encourage and develop multiple perspectives.

Classes include practical sessions in laboratories, field schools throughout northern British Columbia, flexible online learning, lectures, and small-group seminars. UNBC is continuously searching for innovative ways to develop its technology-enabled learning programs.

Research focuses on the social, economic, environmental, and cultural issues of the North, leading to world-class research in fields such as Natural Resources and the Environment, Rural, Remote, and Northern Health, and the Sustainability of Communities. Research is strengthened through partnerships and collaboration with the private sector and public agencies.

Campus Life

At the University of Northern British Columbia, emphasis is placed on nurturing a sense of community. The Student Life Department hosts a number of events and activities that are designed to engage the campus’s diverse student population, with the goal of creating an enjoyable and enriching post-secondary experience.

UNBC is home to more than 60 clubs and organizations covering academic, social, and service interests, such as the Climbing Club, Debate Society, International Students Association, Historical Fencing Club, and the Roller Derby Club. On-campus events include open houses, career nights, family fun days, and workshops.

The University of Northern British Columbia has five campuses across northern British Columbia, with its main campus in Prince George. Prince George is the “Northern Capital” of British Columbia, and is one of the fastest growing regions in Canada. Prince George is home to a variety of galleries, live theatre and symphony performances, as well as notable museums and libraries.
