About the University College of the North
University College of the North (UCN) is located in beautiful Northern Manitoba, Canada, where nature and clean air are in abundance. Established in 2004, UCN has two main campuses, one in The Pas and the other in Thompson, and 12 regional centers. Offering more than 40 academic programs, University College of the North provides students the opportunity to earn their degree, diploma, or certificate in a variety of fields.
At the heart of UCN is their vision to integrate the diverse values and beliefs of northern and Aboriginal people into a quality education that will provide students with the greatest opportunity for a successful career. UCN offers flexibility in its programs through partnerships with the University of Manitoba and mutual programs with other institutions. This gives students more opportunity to study close to home with a course schedule that works best in their life.
Why Study at University College at the North
UCN offers more than 40 programs in the Faculty of Arts and Science, Faculty of Health, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Trades and Technology, and the Faculty of Business. Through its professional associations, UCN is able to offer community-based contract training and Apprentice training, many of which are taught by Red Seal instructors.
Through the UCN Adult Learning Centre mature students can upgrade their education, prepare for college programs, or work towards a Mature High School Diploma.
Many of the programs at UCN are weighted with hands-on training, providing students with unique training that is relevant to the program. The Electrical and Law Enforcement programs provide students with real-life experience through a training house with life-like conditions. Facilities like this are a rare gem; this one being one of the few of its kind in Canada.
Technology is an important tool in all learning these days. At UCN students have access to leading edge technology in the labs, classrooms and libraries. Even the fitness center is modern. In Carpentry labs, students learn on a state of the art CNC (computer numerically controlled) machine. The dental assisting program at UCN utilizes DENTRIX and DEXIS digital imaging technologies, and is the only program in the providence offering this technology.
Both campuses have a residence with computer labs and access to food. All students have the opportunity to participate in cultural programs, sweat lodges and pipe ceremonies. The community offers a number of amenities to give students some fun downtime activities. Students may golf or go fishing in the nearby lakes or snowmobile through the many trails in the winter.
If Northern culture and history is of interest, students may visit The Sam Waller Museum, or participate in the annual Trappers’ Festival and the World Championship Dog Race. The city of Thompson offers more retail, restaurants and entertainment. Walking and cycling along the Spirit Way Path is a great way to stay fit and enjoy the scenery. This award-winning 2.5km path has 16 destinations of interest.
At UCN class sizes are small so that students can get the most out of their education. Fewer student-to-faculty ratios allow for more personal interaction with mentors and instructors. This more intimate environment encourages students to develop close relationships with fellow classmates and to fully enjoy their learning experience at UCN.
