Providence Theological Seminary

Officially opening its doors in 1925 as Providence University College and Theological Seminary, the school offers more than 30 combined graduate and undergraduate programs to students. Located in the town of Otterburne Manitoba since 1970, Providence is an evangelical Christian’s school that is accredited by the Association for Biblical Higher Education, or ABHE.

Over the years the school has undergone a number of name changes. Its original name was the Winnipeg Bible Training School and it later underwent more than 5 additional name changes such as Winnipeg Bible Institute, Winnipeg Bible Institute and College of Theology, Providence Theological Seminary and finally Providence University College & Theological Seminary in 2011.

It was not until 1963 that the school began to offer fully accredited degree programs and it opened its graduate school about a decade later in 1972.

Academics at Providence Theological Seminary

With 20 undergraduate majors and more than 10 graduate programs to choose from, totally more than 200 course offerings, there is no doubt that Providence Theological Seminary is a great option for students that are interested in Christian and Theological studies. Through its partnerships with other post-secondary institutions in the province, such as Brandon University, University of Winnipeg, and the University of Manitoba, many of the courses taken by students at Providence are transferrable to these schools. This provides students the flexibility to study at all these schools and receive credit for work completed.

However, the school is not only for students that have an interest in theology and related areas of study. Providence University College also offers bachelor of Arts degrees and students can major in many more traditional subject areas such as social sciences, humanities, business administration, media, communications, youth leadership as well as biblical and theological studies.

For international students and students where English is their second language, the school also has an English Language Institute. The role of the institute it is to help prepare international students for education at the college or university level.

The focal program of Providence is Biblical and Theological Studies and it is delivered in three different forms:

  • Certificate in Biblical and Theological Studies ( 1 year program)
  • B.A. degrees in Old Testament, New Testament, and Theology (3 year programs)
  • B.A. degrees in Old Testament, New Testament, and Theology (4 year programs)

These programs help to prepare graduates for career in many areas such as counselling, ministry and Christian services in a variety of areas.

Many students come to Providence to complete a graduate certificate. The school offers one year certificates in a number of subject areas such as Christian Spirituality, Cross Cultural Discipleship, TESOL, and TTESOL, with Church Ministry, Biblical Studies and Applied Counselling available to be complete entirely online.

Providence also offers a number of distance and combined programs at the Masters level such as Divinity, Christian Studies, Educational Studies, Counselling, and Counselling Psychology.
