Douglas College

Established in 1970, Douglas College is a major public college located in British Columbia, one of the largest in the region. Its main campus can be found in New Westminster. Disciplines offered at the college include Bachelor’s degrees, general university arts and science courses. The college is also well known for its excellent continuing education career programs in health care, human services, business, and the creative arts. Douglas is divided into six faculties including: Child, Family and Community Studies; Commerce and Business Administration; Health Sciences; Humanities and Social Sciences; Language; Literature and Performing Arts; and Science and Technology.

Every year the college reaches more than 14,000 credit students, 9,000 continuing education students and 1,400 international students across its locations. Douglas College has two campuses and a learning center, including:

  • The New Westminster Campus
  • The David Lam Campus in Coquitlam – recently underwent a million-dollar expansion to offer a state-of-the-art facility for nursing students, psychiatric nursing, and health information management.
  • The Surrey Training Centre – offering short-term training programs


Douglas offers high-quality education with over 500 courses that transfer to some of the top universities in the country. Studying for the first two years at Douglas, through the university transfer programs, saves students a ton in tuition costs. Credits earned at Douglas allow students the flexibility to continue on to a number of other educational institutions.

The campus has a student newspaper that has been in print since 1976, giving students the opportunity to get involved with the many aspects of the print publication process. There are a number of scholarships, awards and bursaries available for students of all faculties, as well as bursaries specifically geared to Aboriginal students.

Research & Innovation

At Douglas College there is opportunity to get involved in innovative research. The college has an in-depth applied research department offering students the chance to work with business enterprises and community groups. Applied research allows students to develop new skills and apply their knowledge to find innovative solutions and create advanced products for cliental.

Campus Life

Douglas College is a vibrant community where small class sizes allow students to get to know one another. Students are encouraged to get engaged in campus life by participating in the creation of programs as well as student organizations.

There are lots of opportunity to meet new people and get involved in diverse programs such as varsity athletics, intramural sports, campus recreation and fitness, community programs, and campus events. There is also a unique leadership program available to students who wish to become student ambassadors. 

New Westminster has a small town feeling but offers lots to see and do. There are many historic buildings and getting around town by Skytrain is easy. Downtown is a growing area, offering restaurants, pubs, shopping and more. Enjoy a stroll in one of the scenic parks or along the river -there is something to offer everyone.
