About Prince Edward Island

Thinking about Studying in Prince Edward Island

One of the three Maritime Provinces in the country located on the east coast, Prince Edward Island is the smallest province in Canada. With approximately 150, 000 residents, PEI is smaller than many cities across the country. The provincial capital, Charlottetown has just over 30,000 residents, offering a small town lifestyle.

One of the many things that attract people to the province is its collection of tourist areas, arts and culture, festivals, beach, and of course, Anne of Green Gables. In fact, Travel + Leisure recently ranked PEI as the top island in continental US and Canada, making it a great place to live and visit for vacation.

Prince Edward Island Education Options

Operated by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, there are three main post-secondary options for students to consider in PEI – a university, community college and a French speaking school. They are:

  • College Acadie I-P-E: The only French language instruction post-secondary school in the province, the school offers students the opportunity to get their diploma in French.
  • Holland College: A community college that is ideal for students looking to work in a trade, the school has an academic and practical component to its programs. One interesting thing about this school when compared to others in the country is that international students are required to pay a $3000 international student fee in addition to the cost of tuition. This fee also applies to studies at the University of Prince Edward Island.
  • University of Prince Edward Island: The largest and most widely recognized school in the province, this is the only university in PEI and is the only academic institution that can award degrees in the province. It is located in the provincial capital and it offers students six main academic disciplines to study – Business, Nursing, Arts, Education, Sciences and Veterinary Medicine.

Cumulatively, these schools offer students an array of academic programs to consider, including options at the certificate, diploma, degree and graduate level. A primarily English region, PEI’s economy is known for agriculture, tourism, and the fishery industry, providing new graduates with a number of diverse career options to consider.
